What is the difference between dry and dehydrated skin?

There is a common misconception that dry and dehydrated skin are the same thing when it comes to skin types. This can be confusing when it comes to choosing the right skin care for you. What does our skin crave? Is a moisturiser better than a serum? Drinking enough water might not even be enough. What can we do to make sure our skin is in the best condition for the colder weather?

 Dry Skin

Nourishment is key when it comes to dry skin. If you have dry skin, you will feel a rough texture and this will often flake. This means that your skin is lacking oil. And believe it or not, our skin needs oil. Oils keep toxins and other bad stuff out and can strengthen our own natural skin barrier. When you have dry skin, it’s usually not just targeted to your face. You can feel this over your hands and scalp at times. You want to try and avoid using harsh, drying soaps, hot baths or showers and a main factor, the weather. Dry skin is usually referred to as a skin type which is why making sure the products you use, are the most beneficial they can be. Some products which are beneficial would be Medik8’s Cream Cleanse followed by Medik8’s Ultimate Recovery Intense

Dehydrated Skin

When your skin is dehydrated in means that your skin is lacking in water. It becomes tricky at times as when the skin is dehydrated in creates more oil to make up for the missing water. This can cause breakouts, irritation, dry patches and can even make your skin oily and dry at the same time! You may need products with some hyaluronic acid and then with a light emollient to sit on top. This means the hyaluronic acid will be absorbed into the skin quickly and encourages the water within the skin to come to the surface. This will alleviate the tight feeling in your face and give you a glow as there will be moisture on your face. Make sure to hydrate from the inside out. We can drink lots and lots of water but sometimes dehydration can be caused by the wrong products, the environment you are in, central heating, air con, not drinking enough water.

The best product we would recommend for someone with dehydrated skin would be Medik8 Gentle Cleanse. This is a great product to be followed up by Medik8 C-Tetra Cream or Medik8 Ultimate Recovery Intense.

Suitable Exfoliators

When we’re exfoliating the skin, we want to get rid of all the nasty toxins but also want the product to nourish the skin at the same time.

When it comes to dry vs dehydrated skin, these need to be treated separately.

For dry skin, exfoliation is important. We don’t want anything too abrasive. We would recommend Medik8’s Pore Refining Scrub then followed by Medik8’s Ultimate Recovery Intense.

For dehydrated skin, the exfoliators that are suitable for this skin type usually have granules in it. We would recommend Medik8’s Pore Refining Scrub. Follow up this treatment with Medik8’s C-Tetra Cream or Medik8’s Ultimate Recovery Intense. We want to help nourish and moisturise the skin so that it’s ready for anything.

If you are unsure about which products to focus on, we are always here to give you advice. Our mini Medik8 range is perfect for trying out products before buying the full-size version! Make sure you are aware of what is in your products before buying and if they are suited to your skin type.
